I went to my very first class today after wanting to try Capoeira for 8 years. I walked out as I was so frustrated. Everyone was really nice and to the credit of the instructor he was a sub.

I went to a class in Menlo Park that is part of the Omulu group and it was very, very informal. 75% of the participants showed up 45 minutes late including the sub.

When I learn something new I must have instruction and I was not getting it. I did not even know the basic steps and the sub whipped out these complicated routines. Anyway like I said everyone was so helpful and friendly but I was not learning anything and only getting more frustrated so I excused myself after 30 minutes into the class.

I know both Omulu and Abada have beginning classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at practically the same time. Abada seems to have a more professional web site and they appear to be more organized.

Omulu's web site has inncorrect address info that I could not even MapQuest and they seem to be super casual about things.

I know there are several capoeira places in SF but those to appear to be the biggest. Any recomendations to newbies on where to go.

Good instruction is extremely important to me and I am looking for a class geared towards beginners.

So after 1 class Im hoping I can find ways to return. Ive taught dance over the years and then for the past 6 months have tapered off dramatically due to work and some pesky neurological drama. Balance, centering, hearing, and endurance abandoned me for some time and now Im finding ways around it and regaining.
What better way to centering than through movement ? What impressed me in that class was the feedback of moving with others.
I have no idea if Im able to return but hopefully will.

Hello all. I'm relatively new to Capoeira (only been involved for a few months). The first group I trained with was an Angola group and they gave me a lot of ideas about Angola and its slower movements being the "original" way of playing, sighting tradition, proper execution of movements, and emphasis on strategy/malicia as the purpose. However, I'm now training in a style of Regional, and the instructor has suggested that Angola was once actually played faster and that the slow movement (along with much of its "traditional" justification) is a relatively recent phenomenon.

I don't mean to get into politics over styles, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about this or can recommend a source for more information on the history.
USSF Community Healing and Spiritual Practice Space (ALL GENDER)

For centuries, movements for justice and liberation have always included ritual, reflective and creative practices, healing and spiritual traditions. How do we honor and uphold these traditions within our social justice movements? How can we build new practices that connect us to our legacies of ancestors and liberation movements? How do we acknowledge that we are continually in a process of freeing and healing ourselves from the effects of oppression, violence, and injustice?

In light of this, we want to invite US Social Forum participants to build a communal space of healing and spiritual practice. We will be creating a space for reflective, healing & meditation practices for USSF participants to experience while attending the gathering. We are seeking volunteers who are interested in helping and/or are healing arts practitioners in reiki, massage, yoga, acupuncture/acupressure, energy and body work, dance, movement, somatics, art therapies, etc. and spiritual practices in prayer and meditation to help us hold this all gender space for the USSF community through the duration of the US Social Forum (June 27th – July 1st, 2007).

The space (location TBA) will include:

(a) a silent area that can be used for prayer, meditation and ritual
(b) an area that can be used for collective work in healing, reiki, massage, yoga etc
(c) a space for quiet conversation, dialogue, writing, art as reflective practice
(d) small break out spaces for individual healing work
(d) creating interfaith public ritual and community altars both indoors and outdoors

We invite you to help us integrate healing and spiritual pracitce as tools for transformation and social justice.

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi. All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

The rules clearly state that this is a no-contact event: The US Open's judges (not listed on the site, but my guess is some of the Mestres listed under "Endorsements" may take on these roles) will awards points based on flow, creativity/range of movements, and game dominance. Movements such as grappling and kicks to the head and body will result in penalties, although "clean" rasteiras and vingativas (takedowns) are allowed to a point.
I just moved out to the Savannah area. There are about 10 capoeiristas out here who are looking for a qualified teacher. If you know of anyone who would be interested in starting a school out here, than please contact me.
Best,

Hi All,

I posted last week, about classes in Los Angeles area, and got some good info. I've searched all over the net though for classes in the Inland Empire Area, (San Bernadino County), for classes, but nothing. Anyone? I live more inland, so I need to find something, that would be convienent to attend at least 2 times per week.

Thanks,
Chris
